SUMMERSIDE -- While Heather Moyse admits her future in bobsleigh and rugby remains up in the air, her immediate plans include heading to Los Angeles on Saturday.
"I'm going to do some training down there (Los Angeles), and I have some friends who live there," said Moyse in an interview Tuesday morning following a ceremony at Credit Union Place to honour her gold-medal performance at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver/Whistler. "I'm going to go down there and see where life takes me."
Moyse, as brakeman, and pilot Kaillie Humphries captured the women's two-man bobsleigh event. Moyse, who is also a motivational/keynote speaker and certified occupational therapist, has also been a standout performer with Canada's national women's rugby team.
"A lot of people are wondering what I am doing in terms of bobsleigh and rugby," said Moyse. "I am definitely taking the next year away from both (bobsleigh and rugby).
"The follow-up question is about Sochi (site of 2014 Winter Olympics), and I just do not know. It's three years away, and I just turned 33 this summer. Kaillie just turned 26, and she's definitely going to Sochi."
Other factors in decision
Moyse admits she is at a point in her life when a number of factors will play a role in her future.
"When do I want to start creating a family, do I want to start focusing more on career aspects and that sort of thing?," commented the daughter of Dr. Cyril and Sharon Moyse of Summerside. "Right now I'm kind of in that not-knowing zone."
Moyse, however, did say that she told her coach that a physical and mental break this year, and maybe next, too, could impact her decision.
"If I took two years off, it would make it more of a challenge for me, and I would be motivated to go back," said Moyse. "I don't want to merely be competing. . . If I do not get the results I know I can achieve, it will be extremely frustrating."
Still not 100 per cent
Moyse said an ankle injury suffered playing rugby is still not 100-per-cent healed. She says "impact stuff" still bothers it, and to stay fit this summer she did a lot of cycling.
"There's no impact in cycling," said Moyse. "It's just rotation. If I go and do sprint intervals on the bike, I can still keep up that power and I will not lose anything in the next year or so."
Moyse also hopes to unveil her new website this week. The address is www.heathermoyse.net.
"Stress in life comes from making things more important than they really are. Failure comes from making things less important...
"What great thing would you attempt if you knew you could not fail?"
"If you think you are too small to be effective, you have never been in bed with a mosquito."
"When nothing is sure, everything is possible."
"Opportunities are everywhere. You just won’t see them if you go through life with blinders on."
"Never be afraid to try something new. Remember, amateurs built the Ark; professionals built the Titanic."
